About us
Madziwa Community Radio initiative was established on the 7th of June 2016 in Madziwa area of Shamva District. Over the years Madziwa Community Radio Initiative (MCRI) has been involved in promotion of access to information issues through using alternative media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and via bulk SMSs. MCRI was established by the people of Shamva who are the owners of the radio station. Although the content distribution intervention which MCRI pursued through alternative media platforms predominantly targeted the residents of Shamva, one could find that it would find its way into the diaspora for instance South Africa, Botswana and Britain whose roots are in the district. The community of Shamva named MCRI after chief Mutumba who is one of the patrons and key stakeholders such as the police, Ministry of Health, Gender and women Affairs in providing with various programs and covering various events held and on behalf of these stakeholders. The information was shared with the community through various online platforms inorder to keep the community well informed about the goings on in their vicinity.
The initiative gained acceptance by a lot of stakeholders in and around Shamva community including the church, general public, education, health, local leadership and business community among others driving enthusiasm to begin radio license application
The licensing was successfully obtained in 2021. Driven by the zeal to achieve the objective of promoting access to information, the idea of being a community radio station came to fruition although it still used social media platforms. It continued to gain popularity in the community than before as numbers of followers were increasing impressively owing to tangible and real contribution to improved information access and coverage of events than before. In 2023, the local authority, Chaminuka Rural District Council (CRDC) offered Chaminuka Stadium Hall for the station’s operation. In March 2023, Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) installed the studio equipment at the hall where the station is operating from. In July 2023, the station officially started to broadcast live on air covering a radius of 8km because there was no a transmitter shelter hence the transmitter was in the studio. ZACRAS purchased a transmitter shelter for the station in February 2024 for a wider and extended coverage to about 60km radius. This process was done in August 2024 by TransMedia Corporation of Zimbabwe. Currently the listenership has grown geographically to cover almost nearly three-quarters of the province with over 100 000 listeners.
